Favorite Foods
Chickens love scratch grains, but it makes them hot, because of the corn in it. It is best to feed them scratch grains only during the winter, so they will be warmer.
Chickens don't have this as a favorite food, but it is a necessity. You need to supply them with some sort of feed. However, scratch grains, are more of a snack. Don't feed them scratch grains as food. Feed them it as a form of a treat. Click Here to see the type of feed I use for my chickens.
If you have little kids, it is an enjoyable activity to feed your chickens kitchen scraps, like corn cobs, grapes, oranges, tomatoes, and other scraps, but don't feed peaches to laying chickens, or they will stop laying for a little while. Another favorite food is, of course, BUGS (especially worms).

Proper Care
In order to keep your chickens healthy and active, provide them with fresh water and food. You should keep their grass cut, to prevent snakes from making a home in their pen. You should find the dusting areas the chickens make, and sprinkle some insect dust, to control lice and other irritating insects. If you experience an animal killing your flock, remember that it won't stop until it kills the entire flock, so try to get rid of it. If you don't wish to kill the predator, what I would recommend you trap it and relocate it somewhere far away. If you have cats, they should not be a problem, for they are afraid of the chickens.
You should be sure to close the chickens up at night, provide them with roosts to sleep on, and clean the coup out regularly. When it is too cold, your chickens may stop laying for a while, so mabye try to put some heat lamps out to keep your chickens warm.
It is common, and will happen, that chickens will fly out of their pen. In order to control this, simply clip the end of their feathers off, and they will not be able to fly out anymore. However, chickens go through a process called molting, and they will grow new feathers. So you have to repeat the process of clipping their feathers.
Most chickens need to have up to 12-14 hours of sunlight in order to lay eggs. If you are expiriencing problems in which your chickens won't lay eggs, try to turn a light on in the chicken coup. This may or may not be a solution to the problem, because sunlight may not be the only cause. If your chicken gets to old, their level of egg production begins to decrease. If you scare your chickens, they usually stop laying eggs for a couple of weeks. In order for you to have eggs, you must maintain a happy, and stress-free enviornment for your chickens.
